CD of the Week: Mavis Staples - If All I Was Was Black

Nov 16, 2017

History.  Mavis Staples has lived it. Recalling her early years touring with her family as the Staple Singers, she experienced the Jim Crow South, the danger and prejudice, and although the band carried the torch during the Civil Rights movement, she says "We are still in it."

Ten new songs, written and produced once again by Jeff Tweedy (WIlco) with three co-written by Mavis, "If All I Was Was Black" is a powerful funky testament to an American treasure.
