Holiday Programming: Unique Holiday Tunes, "A Christmas Carol" & More

Dec 19, 2014

Holiday programming begins at December 24 at 8pm:

8:00pm - All Songs Considered for the Holidays: Bob and Robin travel to outer space for the holidays.  It's going to be out of this world!

9:00pm - Sound Opinions Holiday Spectacular: Santa Soul. Holiday music maven Andy Cirzan visits Sound Opinions every December to share with Jim and Greg a new collection of unique tunes for the season. From the weird to the wonderful, these are not your standard Christmas carols. By day Andy runs Jam Productions in Chicago. By night he searches through record stores, dustbins and basements to find gems for Sound Opinions and his annual compilation. This edition is called Santa Soul. You'll be treated to holiday soul comps of yesteryear. These are killer Xmas dusties from the '60s and '70s —tracks by well-known artists like James Brown, as well as groovy underground acts. So light up the yule log and let the soul party begin! Cheers from everyone at Sound Opinions!

10:00pm - Jonathan Winters A Christmas Carol: A public radio tradition updated this year with NPR host Lisa Simeone. Master comedian Jonathan Winters presents a distinctive reading of Dickens' holiday classic, with a special performing edition prepared by Dickens for his own presentations. Also featuring Mimi Kennedy.

11:00pm - A Jazz Piano Christmas XXV. NPR Music brings you another great concert from Kennedy Center.  Lynne Arriale, Cyrus Chestnut, Harold Mabern, and Kris Davis perform their favorite holiday songs in a program hosted by Felix Contreras.
