Eric Cullen, a.k.a. “Ric Rox” of Ric on the Radio, is a musician and music lover who has played in many local bands over the years (Freeloaders, the Vallejo Street Band, Joe Chaplain Band and currently Amphora),recorded a dozen solo albums, and owned or co-owned three independent record labels.
The theme for his March 12 show is Jamaican Injection. In the late 50s and early 60s, Jamican ska developed from American rock, jazz and R&B fused to island rhythms. Ska evolved into rock-steady,reggae, and dance hall through the 60s, 70s and 80s.Meanwhile, British rock musicians were highly influenced by the Jamicans as far back as the 1960s. The Americans joined in by the mid-80s. Featured artistsinclude original ska, rock-steady and reggae pioneers like Alton Ellis, The Skatelites,The Wailers, Derrick Morgan, The Congos, and Toots and the Maytals.Also featured are 2nd and 3rd generation British and American bands such as The Specials, The Beat, The Toasters, Fishbone, Skankin’ Pickle, and Sublime.
