Last night I had the strangest dream/I never dreamed before/I dreamed the world had all agreed/to lie down quietly next Tuesday evening at 7PM, close your collective eyes, and let the dreams flow, as Something Completely Different wanders into the World of Dreams and finds a wonderful bunch of songs brought back into the World of Consciousness from the Land of Sleep.
You'll hear Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris get together to sing "Beyond My Wildest Dreams." Jimmy Rushing has been gone for many years, but his great jazz/blues voice lives on in songs like "When My Dreamboat Comes Home." Remember "Darn That Dream" by Jimmy Van Heusen and Eddie DeLange? Sure you do! After all, it hit Number One on the Charts in 1940. I guess you just weren't paying attention. Anyway, you'll hear it Tuesday evening in a great version by Stan Kenton and his band. What do you mean - - Stan Who?
Moving right along, we'll feature two of the past's great vocalists, singing Dream Songs ("You Stepped Out of a Dream" by Shirley Horne, and "This Time the Dream's on Me" by June Christy.) In the category of Gone Way Too Soon, we'll play Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's (otherwise known as Iz's) mega-hit Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World. Not to speak of two Bob Dylan songs, Bob Dylan's "Dream" and "I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine," and, for something really off the wall, The Decemberists' "Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect." (I've been enjoying the Decemberists lately: could be I'll do an all-Decemberists show in (wait for it) December! Anyway, speaking of dreams, you'll also hear Joan Baez's "Speaking of Dreams." Now don't fall asleep!
Hear Something Completely Different every Tuesday night, 7-9 pm, on KRCB-FM Radio 91!
