As many of you know, I love to pick three musicians or groups that I feel complement each other in some fashion, build a show around them, in which I repeat the trio ten times for a total of thirty songs (or thereabouts). So...it's happening again, friends, this coming Tuesday.
I discovered OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW some months ago, at a memorial for a friend who's passed on. He was a musician, so there was much singing and instrumentation, including a song that one of the guests led everyone in singing. In among my sadnesses was a touch of joy...such a wonderful tune! I found out it was Ain't It Enough? by the Old Crow Medicine Show, so that's one of the trio you'll be hearing.
The other two, The Kennedys and the Nickel Creek Band, suggested themselves when I stood in front of my CD shelves for a while. Both of them could be classified under the title "Quirky Quountry and Western". The Kennedys sing wildly differing songs like How Will I Ever Be Simple Again, Give Me Back My Country and Namaste (of all titles!) Nickel Creek used to be called The Nickel Creek Band and, under that rubric, they came out with a CD called Little Cowpoke. I chose two titles from this one, I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart and Don't Fence Me In, and then proceeded to more grown-up offerings, like Beauty and the Mess.
Think this is a strange trio? Wait until August 8th.
