I hope that everyone enjoyed last Tuesday's Something Completely Different, featuring the entire 9 cuts of Rev. Sekou and the Holy Ghost's The Revolution Has Come. I think this was the first time in twenty years of broadcasting this show that I played a whole album, one cut after another, no pauses. So now we return to the usual Tuesday evening fare, the S.C.D. Spring Spectacular.
This year, Spring actually begins the day before the Spring Spectacular, on Monday, March 20th, a day that will feature, according to several of the most reliable weather predictions I could find on the Internet, rain. Perhaps as much as an inch of rain. Several days of it, as a matter of fact. And the day after the beginning of Spring? Yet more rain. I know that, in drought-ridden California, even though the drought looks like being over, it's not very nice to express negative feelings about rain, so I won't. I will say that Tuesday's show will include two versions of Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most (Cassandra Wilson and Rickie Lee Jones), two versions of It Might As Well Be Spring (Ella Fitzgerald and John Bucchino [who plays it on Richard Rodgers's own piano]), and two versions of April in Paris (Lady Day [Billie Holiday] and Bird [Charlie Parker]). The show will also feature such unusual offerings as Gathering Rushes in the Month of May by Anne Briggs, Spring Manifestations by Carlos Santana and Up Jumped Spring by Frank Morgan. Something for everybody - - that's our motto (one of them, anyway).
So...you're gonna love this show, even if it is raining. And next week's show? Hey, don't get me started.
