Spelling Bee Results Announced

The Sonoma County Office of Education held its annual countywide spelling competitions earlier this month. Awards were given to the top four spellers in both the elementary and junior high events.

Elementary Spelling Competition: Fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade spellers competed in the annual Elementary Spelling Competition. The 19 participating students had previously won school and regional spelling bees, which made them eligible to compete for the title of county spelling champion.

Varnika Kailish, a fourth-grader from Hidden Valley School in Santa Rosa, won first  place in the competition. She broke the tie in the ninth round by spelling “arteriosclerosis” correctly, then spelling “vacillate” to win the event.

Second place went to sixth-grader Ellie Radmore, who attends Olivet Charter School in Santa Rosa. Sixth-grader Maki Mizutani, from Brook Haven School in Santa Rosa, took third place and Isabella Smithson, a fifth-grader from Proctor Terrace School in Santa Rosa, earned the fourth-place award.

Junior High Spelling Competition: Thirty-four students competed in the 2013 Sonoma County Junior High Spelling Competition. These grade 7-9 students had previously won school-level spelling bees to qualify for the countywide competition.

Ellie Packard, an eighth-grader from Sonoma Country Day School in Santa Rosa won first place in the competition. She broke a tie in the twelfth round by spelling “laureate” correctly, then spelling “dissertation” to win the event.
Second place went to ninth-grader Moses Ost, who attends Orchard View Charter School in Sebastopol. Eighth-grader Lillian Aff, from Guerneville School, took third place and Cicero Faur de Oliveira, a seventh-grader from Hillcrest Middle School in Sebastopol, earned the fourth-place award.
Advancing to the State Championships: The top two spellers in each competition are eligible to advance to the statewide championship for their grade level. The 2013 California State Elementary Spelling Championship will be held on April 20 in Stockton and the 2013 California State Junior High Spelling Championship will take place in San Rafael on May 11.
