NEW Releases February 24, 2017:

Rhiannon Giddens: Freedom Highway

Rhiannon Giddens - Freedom Highway

Freedom Highway is Grammy Award-winner and 2017 Grammy nominee Rhiannon Giddens' follow-up to her highly praised debut album Tomorrow Is My Turn. The record includes nine original songs Giddens wrote or co-wrote while she and her band toured after Tomorrow Is My Turn's 2015 release, along with a traditional song and two civil rights-era songs, "Birmingham Sunday" and Staple Singers' well-known "Freedom Highway," from which the album takes it's name. Giddens co-produced Freedom Highway with multi-instrumentalist Dirk Powell in his Breaux Bridge, Louisiana studio, with the bulk of recording done in wooden rooms built prior to the Civil War. As producers, Giddens and Powell sought to release the stories already in the walls, allowing the space to be a voice in itself. This approach allowed for an emotional fearlessness and presence not always easy to achieve in the studio. Together they assembled the players, which included her superb touring band, local musicians from the bayou, a soulful horn section from New York, and talented family members. The principle recording was done over an intense eight day period. The result is an album that is rawer and more personal than it's predecessor.

Old 97's: Graveyard Whistling

Old 97's - Graveyard Whistling

The 10th album from Texas alt-country stalwarts Old 97's. Graveyard Whistling was recorded in the same Tornillo TX studio as their 1996 debut, Too Far To Care. The band still contains it's original 4 members - Rhett Miller, Ken Bethea, Murry Hammond & Philip Peeples. While there are collaborators like Brandi Carlise and Butch Walker, there aren't more than a handful of bands in history who can claim to have an intact, unchanged line-up in almost 25 years together. Graveyard Whistling is the follow-up to their 2014 album Most Messed Up. The band is recognized as pioneers of the alt-country movement during the mid to late 1990s along with contemporaries such as Uncle Tupelo, Drive-By Truckers, Whiskeytown, The Jayhawks, and The Bottle Rockets.

The Dirty Projectors

Dirty Projectors

Dirty Projectors, the beloved, decade-plus-long recording pursuit of producer, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist David Longstreth, presents the eighth full-length album in the band's wildly varied and fascinating discography. As with previous Dirty Projectors albums, the release sees Longstreth lead a group of hugely talented contributors, including Solange Knowles, Tyondai Braxton, Mauro Refosco (Atoms For Peace, Red Hot Chili Peppers), and Dawn Richard (D∆WN and Danity Kane), in realizing his creative vision.

David Bowie: No Plan EP

David Bowie - No Plan EP

The No Plan EP was originally released digitally on January 8th, 2017 the day after would have been David Bowie's 70th Birthday. The release reached #1 on the iTunes charts of 11 countries including the UK, Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, Norway, Finland and Sweden, and broke the Top 20 in more than 30 territories. The No Plan EP is now being made available on CD and vinyl formats. The vinyl version is pressed on heavyweight 180g black vinyl that includes a special laser etching on side B and is housed in new artwork designed by longtime collaborator Jonathan Barnbrook.

The No Plan EP features the single 'Lazarus' from Blackstar, and the three final David Bowie studio recordings during the sessions for his 28th and final album Blackstar "No Plan," "Killing A Little Time" and "When I Met You." The track "No Plan" was hailed by Rolling Stone who ranked it at #4 in their 50 Best Songs of 2016 as "a magnificent coda... one last transmission from the Bowie universe."

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah: The Tourist

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - The Tourist

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is back with an incredibly infectious new song called "Fireproof." It's the first single from the band's upcoming full-length, The Tourist, due out Feb. 24m 2017. "Fireproof" is a thumping, synth-heavy look at how naive people can be. "I know it's hard to win," sings frontman Alec Ounsworth. "But how could I have thought that we'd ever lose." It is really a be-careful-what-you-wish-for kind of song," Ounsworth tells NPR Music in an email. "I'm starting to accumulate these, in the sense that it explores the idea of trying to win people over and then, once you have, trying to let them go. To be 'fireproof' in this context is to be dangerously self-confident - to have the capacity to try almost anything. The regret comes later." The Tourist is the first new album from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah since 2014's Only Run.

Scott H. Biram: The Bad Testament

Scott H. Biram - The Bad Testament

With heart of a genuine Texas bluesman, the head (banging) of Zappa and Lemmy disciple and boots resting in the dust outside of town at sunrise, Scott H. Biram journeys through the harrowing human condition like no one else. A walk on the Biram side-straddles the chasm between sin and redemption, and The Bad Testament lands somewhere west of the Old Testament and south of an AA handbook. It's a record of hard grinding lost love and deep, dark Americana with songwriting on the razor's edge of aggression and deftness, thoroughly contemporary but steeped in the backwaters, back porches, and back alleys of our collective musical heritage.

Thundercat: Drunk

Thundercat - Drunk

Stephen Bruner, bka as Thundercat returns with his follow up to 2015s The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam . The latest album titled Drunk is released on Flying Lotus Brainfeeder label and features production from Flying Lotus himself. After attaining national attention following his Grammy award winning collaborations on Kendrick Lamar s To Pimp A Butterfly , Bruner delivers arguably his most ambitious work to date. Vocal features include Michael McDonald & Kenny Loggins, Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa and Pharrell. In addition to Kendrick Lamar, Thundercat has worked with a wide range of artists including Erykah Badu, Childish Gambino, Mac Miller, Ty Dolla $ign, Bilal, Suicidal Tendencies, Kamasi Washington, Terrace Martin and more making him one of the most in demand musicians of our time.

Roy Orbison: Black & White Night 30

Roy Orbison - Black & White Night 30

Deluxe CD/DVD edition. Black & White Night 30 is a re-imagined, re-edited, remastered and expanded version of the original television special. Re-edited by Roy's youngest son Alex Orbison, the program has been restored to reflect the correct set order as the audience who attended the show saw it. Liner notes written by son Roy Orbison Jr. Are included in the packaging as well as a treasure trove of bonus content. Black & White Night 30 includes a previously unseen alternate version of "Oh, Pretty Woman," a previously unseen performance "Blue Angel," and a 'secret concert' performed by the band after the audience had left of five songs featuring alternate takes of "Dream You", "Comedians," "Candyman," "Claudette," and "Uptown." The audio for the concert is available on CD with buyers of Black & White Night 30 receiving a download code for access to the audio records of the 'secret concert.' Additionally included is a brand new 33-minute mini-documentary consisting of rehearsal footage and pre and post show interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello and more plus a photo montage consisting of 20 still photos from the show and new photos of show memorabilia, mostly unused and unseen in any context.

Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge: Mount Royal

Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge - Mount Royal

Mount Royal, the second full-length album from virtuosic guitar duo Julian Lage & Chris Eldridge, is a testament to the visceral power of incredible musicianship and true creative collaboration. Produced by Gabe Witcher (one of Eldridge's fellow Punch Brothers), Mount Royal includes eight originals, several reimagined versions of old bluegrass songs, and a cover of Eddie Vedder's 'Sleeping By Myself' that is as engrossing as it is surprising. The arrangements on the album's 12, mostly instrumental tracks feature complex, rollicking guitar lines one would expect from such technically gifted players, but these moments are allowed to breathe. That is, Lage and Eldridge understand the potency of space in their compositions, and the sonic hills and valleys illustrate that greatness often lies in the unexpected. Lage's notable jazz background is apparent, yet Mount Royal ventures into old-time, gospel and bluegrass without ever settling into one genre. The energy between Lage and Eldridge is remarkable, and Mount Royal does not fail in conveying the pair's mutual passion for the acoustic guitar and respect for collaboration.

Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks: Greatest Licks

Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks - Greatest Licks

Dan Hicks was an American treasure. Since the early 1960's, Hicks deftly blended elements of swing, jazz, folk and country music to create a truly unique sound. His lyrics range from the simply sublime to the sublimely ridiculous, all presented with his uniquely skewed and inscrutable touch. Dan's irresistible sense of rhythm, hip lyrical styling, laid back vocalizing, and infamous on-stage wit lasted well through his final recordings with us at Surfdog Records. So, in celebration of his life and legacy, we pay tribute to Dan with this album (marking the one-year anniversary of his passing), humbled and proud that we had him in the Surfdog family. Here's to the music, the laughs, and the wild ride... these are Dan's greatest licks!
