Moorland Neighborhood Park Plans Take Shape

  Plans for a new county park near the site of the Andy Lopez shooting have been drawn up and are heading for construction, prepared with extensive input from the neighborhood.

  There was also considerable discussion about incorporating a community center building in the small park site, but Sonoma County Regional Parks planner Scott Wilkinson says ultimately, that had to be left out.

Neighborhood Input Sought for Moorland Park

A series of workshops will begin in Santa Rosa’s Moorland neighborhood Thursday night, to gather ideas and priorities for designing a community park to memorialize Andy Lopez.

While it is clear that the current momentum to create a neighborhood park for Moorland is driven by the community’s response to the Andy Lopez shooting, Sonoma County Regional Parks planner Scott Wilkinson explains that the land for it has long been intended as a park site.

Roseland Annexation inches forward

  Just about everyone involved thinks Santa Rosa’s annexation of Roseland from the county is a good idea whose time has come. But the process to accomplish that is moving at a very deliberate pace. 

The next meeting of the joint City/County Annexation Committee is scheduled for October 9th.

Open Space Funding for Roseland Projects

  Two key civic projects in Santa Rosa’s Roseland area have additional momentum behind them, with significant new funds from the Sonoma County Ag and Open Space District. The matching grants will support a community plaza and the Andy Lopez memorial park.

A community forum is schedule this evening, giving members of the public the opportunity to discuss the death of 13 year-old Andy Lopez and this week’s announcement that Deputy Sheriff Erik Gelhaus will not be criminally charged for the shooting. KRCB’s Danielle Venton spoke with Supervisor Zane to discuss the purpose of the forum. 

The forum will be held between 6:00 and 8:30 p.m. at the Santa Rosa Veterans Hall, and is hosted by Sonoma County Supervisor Shirlee Zane and Community and Local Law Enforcement Task Force. 

Police Killings Spur Call For Federal Investigation

  The US Justice Department is being asked to investigate the more than five dozen officer-involved fatalities in Sonoma County since 2000. That was the year an earlier US Commission on Civil Rights submitted its report on the 18 similar deaths in the previous decade.

    For attorney Isaak Schwaiger, a former Sonoma County prosecutor as well as a Marine who served in Iraq, a crucial pivot point in modern policing is the primacy now given to “officer safety.”

'Andy's Youth' Set March, Call for Transparency

There’s no school today, due to the President’s Day holiday, so a group of students have planned and organized another public demonstration in Santa Rosa. They’re calling themselves Andy’s Youth, and the event is centered on renewed calls for transparency in the investigations into the shooting death of Andy Lopez. Here’s more about it on today’s Exchange segment.

 Today’s march and demonstration is slated to get started at 1:30 pm in Old Courthouse Square in downtown Santa Rosa.
