Beale Street Caravan

This week we have the highly anticipated Brian Owens & The Deacons of Soul in a live performance captured at the Levitt Shell. Brian Owens comes to us from his hometown of St Louis, our Mississippi River cousin to the north. Much like our rivertown neighbor to the south, New Orleans, it’s a city long associated with the sounds of the African American created genres of blues, jazz, gospel, and soul. He recently released an album called Soul of Cash… a soulful reimagining of works from Memphis music icon Johnny Cash’s catalog.

This week on Beale Street Caravan we have soul music legend and Fat Possum Records recording artist, Don Bryant. Plus, BSC Contributor Robert Gordon will be with us to talk about the History of Hi Records.

Beale Street Caravan airs Wednesday nights at 11 pm on KRCB-FM Radio 91 / streaming @ radio.krcb.org / Comcast channel 961 throughout the Bay Area / Download the FREE KRCB App @ iTunes & Google Play!

We have a lot in store for you this week on BSC! First, we have The Bo-Keys performing in Studio A of the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. We sit down and talk with Floyd Newman, a founding member of The Memphis Horns. Then we head to the Beale Street Music Fest and catch a set from BSC perennial, Reba Russell.

It's real-deal Memphis Blues... the kind of sophisticated blues and jazz sounds you would have heard floating from the windows of The Palace on Beale Street in the 40's and 50's. Keeping the flame burning bright is Memphis’ own Love Light Orchestra.

This week on the program we have Mellotron Variations. An instrumental project built around one of the most unique instruments ever conceived.

We’ll also hear from rock and roll veteran, and sideman to the stars, Hunt Sales.

BSC contributor Jim Spake is back with us to continue his series, "Crazy About a Saxophone"  on the legendary sidemen that played rock’s original lead instrument.

As with everything that is constantly evolving, KRCB-FM has a few schedule changes coming up that will take effect on May 1st.

The main daytime (5 am – 7 pm) block of programs that you know and love are staying right where they are – so you don’t have to worry about them.

The weeknight schedule is being shaken up, shuffled, and will hopefully be fun and entertaining to listen to! There are also a couple of changes on Saturdays and Sundays as well.

Here’s the lineup that will be in place beginning Tuesday May 1st, 2018:

Tuesday night on Beale Street Caravan:

Over the past few seasons, BSC has brought our listeners a lot of Memphis music from a funky Midtown dive known as DKDC (Don't Know, Don't Care). On this week’s program we take a closer look at what makes a music spot special, how it fits in with the overall scene, and we talk with the owner, restaurateur Karen Carrier. Oh, and we also have killer performances from The Reigning Sound and Lucy Woodward!
