Charles Mingus

On this program, we're highlighting a new project from bassist and composer Ark Ovrutski, called "Journey Moments," which includes two players who have become almost "regulars" on this show, pianist Benito Gonzalez and drummer McClenty Hunter Jr.. Ark Ovrutski grew up in Ukraine. He was born in Kiev and started out on violin as a child. His father loved jazz, and pretty soon so did Ark, who switched to the bass, and cites Charles Mingus as a major inspiration.

Join host Doug Jayne, Saturday night at 7:00 pm, for 4 hours of great music on Jazz Connections!

From Doug:

"I was drawn to the music of the Big Bands as a kid, watching my dad reminisce and play his rare Glenn Miller tapes. As I grew up and starting digging progressive rock, I expanded into progressive Jazz, such as John McLaughlin, Weather Report and their ilk. When I started in the record biz in 1975, I was enlightened by my customers, some true Jazz fans that showed me the albums to check out. Miles and Mingus and Monk: Oh MY!!
