Colorado

This week’s solar-powered musical meeting features an up-and-coming band that is already making waves, alongside a well-established musician who makes his first appearance on the show. Australian folk pop band Oh Pep! takes the stage to share music from the band’s debut release, plus Indiana-born / Nashville-based singer and piano virtuoso Jon McLaughlin shares some of his solo material, as well as a few songs with eTown’s house band – the eTones.

This week on eTown: José González / Mandolin Orange; ECHIEVEMENT AWARD: Ruth Libby

In this back-by-popular-demand airing, eTown hosts Nick and Helen Forster welcome Swedish indie folk artist José González and his band for a first visit to eTown. Also with us is North Carolina-based musical duo Mandolin Orange. It’s a musical combination like no other this week, plus a great eChievement Award story about a woman who is keeping office supplies out of landfills and getting them into the hands of teachers. Be sure to tune in or podcast!

Our guest this week on Art of the Song is Colorado singer/songwriter Darryl Purpose. After a time studying guitar, he went to Las Vegas as a teenager and began a career as a professional card player. He was soon known as the world’s fastest card counter. Banned from casinos on six continents, he still calls this the “only real job he’s ever had.” In 1996, Darryl began to tour nationally as a solo singer/songwriter. Eight years, six CDs and a thousand shows later, he was headlining the top folk venues and festivals across North America.

It’s a family affair this week in eTown, as mother-and-son folk duo Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear pull up a couple of stools and share their intimate and soulful brand of acoustic music for the listening audience. Also with us is Canadian-born / Nashville-based singer/songwriter Lindi Ortega. After extensive touring as a backup singer for The Killers’ Brandon Flowers, Lindi decided to step to front of the stage, where quickly her music has already been nominated for two Juno Awards and two Canadian Country Music Awards.
