• Governor Jerry Brown isn’t backing long-term changes to Medi-Cal or Covered California. But he has proposed some one-time allotments that could improve health services for inmates, the mentally ill and rural residents going forward.

• The revised spending plan proposed by Governor Jerry Brown Friday is drawing praise from lawmakers in both political parties for placing much of California’s projected nine billion dollar budget surplus in reserve.

Today's reporting by Sammy Caiola and Ben Adler.

We devote this entire episode to one story: Over the course of six months, reporter and This American Life contributor Jack Hitt followed a group of inmates at a high-security prison as they rehearsed and staged a production of the last act—Act V—of Hamlet.
