The County of Sonoma and the City of Santa Rosa in partnership with FEMA are transitioning both Local Assistance Centers (LACs) located in downtown Santa Rosa and Sonoma Valley to Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) on November 12, 2017. The LACs will close at 7:00pm Saturday, November 11th and re-open at 9:00am on Sunday, November 12th as DRCs.

The record-breaking destruction of the North Bay fires has many experts questioning the way California determines fire risk.  It seems clear that stricter building codes will be required in high risk areas, but some say the current risk designations are outdated and need re-mapping. Penny Nelson, a host of KQED’s The California Report recently discussed the issue with KQED science reporter Lauren Sommer.

The Atlas and Tubbs wildfires have ravaged Napa and Sonoma counties since October 8th. Combined, these are the deadliest and most destructive fires in the state’s history.

While much attention has been focused recently on federal health care policy, California lawmakers have advanced a bill to create a new “single payer” system here, one that would take insurance companies out of the picture altogether. Advocates for the bill made the case for it at a Town Hall  meeting in Healdsburg last night.
