Kansas City

As the promise of summer rises with the heat index, we explore the world of daydreams, nostalgia, fantasy and future selves. Time travel with songwriting scenester Eric Andersen back to his days hanging with the Beats at City Lights bookstore and Greenwich Village’s folk music scene, train-riding across Canada with Janis Joplin, Buddy Guy and the Grateful Dead and tripping out on music and hallucinogens.

Our guests this week on Art of the Song are Iain Matthews and Andy Roberts of Plainsong. Plainsong was a British folk-rock band, formed in early 1972 by Iain Matthews (formerly of Fairport Convention), Andy Roberts and 2 others. The original group split up before the end of that same year. Some eighteen years later, Andy encountered Iain when he was performing in a pub in Brighton, and the two decided to revive Plainsong. In 2014 they recorded some songs of Richard Farina, to mark the approaching 50th anniversary of his death.
