Asbestos Verdict Fails to Clear the Air at SSU

For 24 years, Thomas Sargent was an environmental health and safety specialist at Sonoma State. Earlier this month, a Sonoma County civil jury agreed that he'd been harassed and forced to resign under duress in 2015, after complaining about the school's handling of asbestos in Stevenson Hall. But the verdict has not put an end to the concerns, as Steve Mencher reports.

  A sweeping plan to give the California Department of Food Agriculture free rein in applying pesticides statewide is being contested by a broad coalition of food and environmental groups that contend it violates the state’s Environmental Quality Act.

   During the public comment period, before the environmental document was finalized, thousands of people offered thoughts, suggestions and feedback. Yet very little of that was acknowledged, says Nan Wishner of the California Environmental Health Imitative.

Settlement in Sebastopol CVS Suit

  For the past three years, Sebastopol has been embroiled in a heated debate over a proposed new drugstore development near the heart of downtown. The CVS project was approved by the city, then both parties were sued by a new grassroots group, the Committee for Small Town Sebastopol, and there has since been a lot of back and forth, mostly involving lawyers. That has now come to an end.
