• A man in the United Kingdom has been infected with the world’s worst case of treatment-resistant gonorrhea after a sexual encounter with a woman in Asia.  Health officials are worried about a spread of the infection immune to traditional antibiotics. 

• Vice President Mike Pence says he is happy to see high school students engaging in the civic process after it was announced a group was organizing a Pride celebration in his hometown.

• Wedding bells began to ring for same-sex couples in Australia last week.  Two couples tied the knot in ceremonies happening just moments after midnight. 

• Here in the U.S, the Human Rights Campaign released the 2017 state equality index report.  Many state legislatures across the country considered sweeping anti-LGBT laws to allow wholesale discrimination, including some that attack marriage equality and transgender youth. The good news is that California is among the 13 top rated states in the report.

California’s Proposition 8 and most of the federal Defense of Marriage Act have been invalidated now, and 15 states have legalized same sex marriage. That leaves a complicated legal patchwork for those couples to navigate around such things as such things as social security, divorce law, and income tax filing status.
