Thursday, June 28th, marks 49 years since the Stonewall riots launched the modern day LGBT civil rights movement.  They weren’t the first riots of their kind to happen in the country, but they were the first to make headlines.

Sunday’s LGBTQ pride celebrations commemorated the riots at Stonewall and all the others that fueled the movement.  Today’s Outbeat News segment takes a look back when it all started.

• An Ohio judge took away custody of a 17-year-old transgender teen away from her parents because the parents refused to authorize hormone therapy based on their religious beliefs.  The teen will live with her grandparents and continue her transition from female to male. 

• NBC news reports Santa Rosa has the 2nd highest percentage of same-sex married couples in the nation. 

• Sonoma County Pride is planning this year’s celebration in downtown Santa Rosa, June 1 through 3 and they are looking for volunteers.

This month on Outbeat News In Depth, Greg Miraglia talks with Prop 8 plaintiff Kris Perry and Sandy Stier about how they met and their experience being the faces and name of California’s marriage equality case that went all the way to the United States Supreme Court.  We’ll also share information about the new LGBT literature course being offered at Santa Rosa JC this fall.

In February the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence from the Russian River Order will talk with us about their organization and the many projects they have planned for this year.  The Sisters are an amazing gift to the west county community and they do a tremendous amount of fund raising for many valuable non-profits in Sonoma County.   We'll also talk with Dr. Tim Seelig who is the conductor of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus.  The Chorus is celebrating its 40th birthday this year and are planning a trip through the south this fall to educate, inform, and entertain.  Dr.
