Sonoma County Recovers

Sonoma County Assessor, William F. Rousseau, is urging residents displaced by the October 2017 wildfires to update their mailing address with the Assessor’s office. 

“We are working with the Sonoma County Tax Collector, Erick Roeser, on insuring that all property tax mailings are up to date,” said William F. Rousseau, Sonoma County Assessor.

At a town hall meeting tomorrow about fire recovery and rebuilding in Sonoma County, officials will present updates and listen to citizens’ concerns. Among elected officials scheduled to attend are members of the Santa Rosa City Council and the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors, State Senators Mike McGuire and Bill Dodd, and Assembly Members Jim Wood, Cecilia Aguiar-Curry and Marc Levine.

Representatives Mike Thompson and Jared Huffman will be there – and KRCB News Director Steve Mencher talked with Huffman about the meeting.

Community meeting will be held Saturday, January 13 at 10:00 a.m. 

Federal, state, county and city leaders will all come together next week for a Recovery & Rebuilding Town Hall in Santa Rosa on Saturday, January 13 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. The Town Hall will be an opportunity for residents to receive updated information on debris removal and what to expect during the rebuilding process in the months to come. 

Topics that will be covered at the Town Hall include:

The State/Federal Disaster Recovery Center in Santa Rosa will convert to a U.S. Small Business Administration Disaster Loan Outreach Center. The center will continue to operate at the Press Democrat Building beginning Friday, Dec. 29, 2017 at 9 a.m. 

Multiple agencies working collaboratively to warn residents of risk of flooding and mudflows in identified medium and high risk burn areas  

Survivors of the October wildfires may still be able to qualify for disaster assistance even if they receive a letter from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) or the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) saying they are not eligible. 

Often it’s a matter of needing to submit more information so FEMA or SBA can continue processing the application. Examples of missing documentation might include an insurance settlement letter, proof of residency or ownership of a damaged property, or simply that the applicant did not sign the required documents. 

California Penal Code Section 396 generally prohibits charging a price that exceeds, by more than 10 percent, the price of an item before a state or local declaration of emergency. This law applies to those who sell food, emergency supplies, medical supplies, building materials and gasoline. The law also applies to repair or reconstruction services, emergency cleanup services, transportation, freight and storage services, hotel accommodations and rental housing.
