Sonoma County Supervisor Shirlee Zane is introducing a documentary called "The S Word" on Wednesday July 11 at 6 p.m. in the Supervisors Chambers in Santa Rosa. The film follows a young woman who survived a suicide attempt and travels around the U.S. meeting other survivors and documenting their stories. It includes statistics meant to shock audiences out of their complacency about this growing problem.

We remember chef, author, and television personality Anthony Bourdain.  He was found dead today of suicide. He was 61. On his Peabody-and Emmy-award winning CNN series Parts Unknown he traveled around the world to learn about diverse cuisines and cultures.  He worked in restaurants for decades.  His memoir Kitchen Confidential, which grew out of an unsolicited New Yorker article, made him famous.

Firearms Research Center to Explore Gun Deaths with State Funds

Gun violence as a public health crisis will be the sole focus of a new, state-funded research center in Sacramento. It’s the first robust investigation of firearms in California since federal grant money was slashed in the late 90s.
