In 1968, the influential Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee released 134 singles, including songs by Otis Redding, The Staple Singers, and today’s guest, William Bell. He joins host Talia Schlanger to share a look inside an integrated Stax Records fifty years ago, while racial tension broiled outside – There was rioting in the streets, and Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. Musically, 1968 was a wildly productive year, and it's captured on a new box set called Stax ‘68, featuring all 134 singles. That's coming up, on this special encore edition of the World Cafe.
